Traditional corneal flap vs Intralase
For some surgeries, your doctor may elect to use a microkeratome to create the corneal flap. A microkeratome is a hand held surgical instrument which creates an incision in the cornea, thus creating the a corneal flap. The intralase bladeless lasik creates a laser incision. With intralase a blade is not necessary.

Intralase and traditional microkeratome are not painful.
Some patients may not be eligible for intralase lasik or lasik performed with a microkeratome. In that case, photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK) maybe necessary. To determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction, it is necessary for you to come in for a free complete vision evaluation. If PRK is necessary, PRK is performed by scraping the surface of the cornea. PRK is more painful than LASIK yet produces comparable long term outcomes.
